How to Stop Stammering and Start Confidently Telling People What You Do
Hey Friend!
Have you ever had someone ask you what you do and you stammer, change the subject, or feel SUPER uncomfortable answering?
Do you ever secretly hope that people WON’T ask you what you do?
You’re not alone!
When I first started coaching I struggled to tell people what I did. Not only is it common for this to happen when you are starting out, it can be hard to do this when you are pivoting or making changes in your business.
Here are the SIX steps to confidently tell people what you do:
- Know WHO you help. (ex: I help Christian Entrepreneurs)
- Know WHAT you help them do. (Ex: I help you ditch doubt and take confident action to create a business and life you love).
- Know HOW you help them. (Ex: Mindset coaching).
- Know WHY you help them. (Example: It’s my calling and I do it to be an example for my daughters.) Knowing WHY you do what you do helps you show up and do the uncomfortable things required to get the result you want. You don’t need to tell people this (unless you just want to), BUT you need to know it for YOU.
- Practice saying steps 1-3 to yourself until it becomes easy to say. This can seem stilly but it’s SUPER important. Say it while you are doing laundry. Say it while you are putting on your make-up.
- Practice saying it in front of other people and to other people. (Example: tell your friends/family and go to networking events). Have the right mindset for this step is KEY). The purpose is to build confidence by practicing telling people who you are and what you do, not to get clients or make sales. Plus, never know what opportunities will come your way from this exercise. (I’ve had some awesome opportunities present from both telling my friends/family and networking events).
Ultimately the reason we struggle to share what we do is because we lack clarity and are thinking about what others are thinking about us. When we have that clarity and stop focusing on others’ opinions about us, we are free to just answer the question, “So what do you do?”
