Question: Are you an audio book person, a physical book lover, or a Kindle enthusiast? Well, whatever your preference, I recently finished a fantastic audio book that I can’t wait to share with you. It’s called “The High Five Habit” by Mel Robbins, and it’s packed with game-changing insights that I believe will truly bless you. So let’s dive in and explore three key takeaways from this empowering book that can help you unlock your full potential.
Have you ever noticed how often we judge ourselves when we look in the mirror? The time we spend scrutinizing our appearance and flaws can be draining. Mel Robbins shares a powerful practice called “The High Five Habit” – a simple yet transformative exercise of high-fiving yourself in the mirror every morning. It may sound a bit silly at first, but it serves as a reminder to see yourself beyond your physical features and flaws.
Instead of judging yourself, try flipping the script. Look in the mirror and see the person you are, focusing on the qualities and potential you possess. When we embrace self-appreciation, we’re better equipped to love ourselves and extend that love to others. Remember, loving your neighbor as yourself presupposes that you already love who you are.
Your Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a crucial filter in your brain that helps you determine what’s important to focus on. It enables us to recognize patterns, process information, and make decisions. By training your RAS, you can shape your thoughts and mindset positively. Our RAS helps us pay attention to things that align with our beliefs and goals. By training our RAS to focus on positive, inspiring, and empowering thoughts, we can make a significant impact on our daily lives. Philippians 4:8 in the Bible echoes this idea, urging us to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy. In the book, Mel explains the neuroscience behind the RAS in a way that’s simple and easy to understand. I love when I see science confirming what we already know through scripture.
Visualization is a powerful tool that has been embraced by professionals across various fields. I remember learning in college psychology classes about the positive impact it has on athletes. Visualization allows you to mentally rehearse success and build the confidence needed to achieve your goals.
Mel Robbins discusses the importance of visualizing yourself accomplishing the smaller, less glamorous tasks that lead to your desired outcomes. Whether it’s in business or personal growth, imagine yourself conquering those uncomfortable or challenging moments.
Instead of discouraging yourself by trying to picture a seemingly unattainable end result, like crossing the finish line of a marathon, focus on the smaller tasks and steps you need to take to get there. Visualize yourself tackling those challenges and pushing forward EVEN WHEN things get tough.
As I was reading what Mel had to say about visualizing the smaller tasks and steps, it made me think of prayer. So often we go to God in prayer for the outcome or result we want in our lives, but sometimes overlook seeking His help in the small, mundane things. I’ve noticed that when I invite Him in and rely on Him for these smaller things, it deepens my relationship with Him.
“The High Five Habit” by Mel Robbins is a powerful book that offers valuable insights into seeing yourself for who you truly are, training your mind, and visualizing your path to success. By high-fiving yourself in the mirror, you begin each day with a positive mindset. Through RAS training, you focus on positive thoughts and beliefs, setting the stage for personal growth. And by visualizing yourself taking small steps towards your goals, you unlock your potential to achieve greatness.
Remember, you were created for a purpose… and I believe in you!
